Special considerations when translating websites

The special challenge when translating homepages is that they have to be adapted to the target group and thus to the cultural particularities of the target country. For this reason, a target group analysis is first carried out to ensure the best possible conditions for your international corporate presence. In addition, the legal requirements of the respective country must be taken into account when translating websites.

This is why the professional translation of general terms and conditions, the legal notice, shipping costs and data protection declarations, to name but a few, plays an important role.

International SEO for website translation

Simply translating a website into a foreign language is not enough to build a successful international business. Search engine optimization is a decisive factor in translation. International SEO includes the keyword optimization of content for search engine rankings so that your website can be found by users.

In this context, PRODOC always focuses on the respective target group of the country and combines linguistic and cultural characteristics with the principles of international SEO for an optimal translation and performance of your website.

Layouting during translation

Of course, the layout of websites is also very important: the layout must always be adapted to the respective country-specific website, as this is also a ranking factor for Google. Furthermore, all websites must also be optimized for mobile use. This must be taken into account, especially when translating into languages that use more letters and characters than German or English, such as Chinese, Russian or Arabic. PRODOC bases the translation of the content on the existing layout so that the translated text fits in perfectly.

Which CMS systems are suitable for translation?

The vast majority of website translations are carried out in CMS systems such as WordPress. To map multiple languages in WordPress, special plug-ins must be used. If you choose Typo 3 as your CMS, support for multiple languages is standard. The first step towards a website translation is therefore always to check whether your CMS system supports multilingual content or whether it needs to be expanded.

When selecting a system for managing multilingual websites, it is essential to ensure that the content management system has an export function for the original text and an import function for the translated text.

The CAT tool should be able to read the export format. This is the case if it is XML, XLIFF or a pure text format. This is easily possible with WordPress and Typo3.

Selecting a suitable CMS system

WordPress with WPML

WPML - Tool for website translation

WPML is a plug-in that enables the exchange of data between WordPress and any CAT tool. In some cases, a customer-specific XML configuration is necessary.

Typo3 with l10nmgr

Typo 3 l10nmgr - Tool for website translation

The l10nmgr is an extension for Typo3, which supports the exchange of CMS data with CAT tools such as memoQ for website translation.

At PRODOC, we can generally use memoQ’s flexible import filter to translate all websites whose data can be exported and imported in XML or XLIFF format.

However, this requires the creation and testing of a customer-specific filter configuration, for which additional costs are incurred. These usually pay for themselves quickly if more than 10 websites are to be translated.

Efficient website localization – the workflow matters

As with many other tasks for the international marketing of products, technical translation plays an important role in the localization of websites. Often, however, extracting the source texts to be translated and entering the translated texts is a decisive cost factor.

In the following we consider 2 possible workflows:

Even though the net translation cost with PRODOC is 1.5x more expensive, our customers save money in the end. And they make fewer mistakes because the cumbersome manual input of translations is no longer necessary.

Frequently asked questions about website translation

What is the difference between a website translation and a localization?

A translation is a word-for-word and contextually accurate transfer of texts into another language. However, such a translation is usually not sufficient for texts in other markets, as the cultural particularities must also be taken into account. This is known as localization. Localization therefore means that the product and its translation are adapted to the respective market. This includes not only the texts, but also the design of the brand. Sometimes even the product names have to be changed completely. This also includes the harmonization of formats such as telephone numbers, time and date formats, currency and measurement units.

Does PRODOC also translate online shops?

We also take on the professional translation of online shops, as internationalization in this area is particularly important for you to achieve more awareness and more sales. Because your online shop can only be a success on the new market if it is tailored to the respective target group and its culture.

How much does a website translation cost?

Use our practical price calculator to get an initial overview of the costs for your website translation. Prices vary depending on whether you require a machine translation with post-editing, a simple technical translation or a certified translation service. Our special advantage at PRODOC is that we do not charge for internal repetitions and 100% matches.

No false expectations when translating websites

Translation included

The translator’s task is to render the text of your homepage and its message in the foreign language. Fine-tuning the wording and adapting the style of the translation and, if necessary, adapting the translated text to the target market are additional services that are not included in the regular translation price.

Additional service: Transcreation

The text of your homepage, which you want us to translate, was probably also created in several rounds of voting. You should therefore see the translation as a first draft on the basis of which the final text can be created. We are happy to carry out this fine-tuning in consultation with you – billing is on a time and material basis.
