The first step towards a website translation is therefore always to check whether your CMS system supports multilingual content or whether it needs to be expanded.

When selecting a system for managing multilingual websites, it is essential to ensure that the content management system has an export function for the original text and an import function for the translated text.

The CAT tool should be able to read the export format. This is the case if it is XML, XLIFF or a pure text format. This is easily possible with WordPress and Typo3.

The l10nmgr is an extension for Typo3, which supports the exchange of CMS data with CAT tools such as memoQ for website translation.

At PRODOC, we can generally use memoQ’s flexible import filter to translate all websites whose data can be exported and imported in XML or XLIFF format.

However, this requires the creation and testing of a customer-specific filter configuration, for which additional costs are incurred. These usually pay for themselves quickly if more than 10 websites are to be translated.

What is the difference between a website translation and a localization?

A translation is a word-for-word and contextually accurate transfer of texts into another language. However, such a translation is usually not sufficient for texts in other markets, as the cultural particularities must also be taken into account. This is known as localization. Localization therefore means that the product and its translation are adapted to the respective market. This includes not only the texts, but also the design of the brand. Sometimes even the product names have to be changed completely. This also includes the harmonization of formats such as telephone numbers, time and date formats, currency and measurement units.
