Translations of German technical texts

German as the basis for translations into many other languages

  • Most of our customers work in German or English. Accordingly, all types of technical communication are prepared first in one of these two languages.

Here, technical communication refers to every written representation of information.

This ranges from marketing texts and websites to datasheets, user manuals and product catalogs to software interfaces or configuration files.

  • At PRODOC, German texts are used as the basis for Technical Translation and Software Localization in most cases.

    Legal framework conditions

The German to English language combination is of particular importance for the Industrial Automation sector, whose products are only installed and operated by qualified personnel. There are no requirements here that Technical Documentation must exist in the language of the anticipated user.

It is, however, necessary on an international level for the documentation to be available in English so that it can be understood by the largest possible circle of users.

    English as a corporate language

The Technical Translation from German to English is becoming increasingly significant, as larger German customers have defined English as their corporate language, but continue to create most documents in German.

The English translation of German texts then becomes the leading released document. This English translation is subsequently used as a source language for translations into other languages.

  • Translate from German to European languages

Requirements according to European directives and laws

For devices that are subject to the Machinery Directive as well as ATEX products for explosion protection and products for industrial safety, stricter regulations apply.

It must be ensured here that information important for operation of the product is available in the language of the respective user.

At PRODOC, we therefore translate from German to all European languages.

  • Target market: Asia

Asia – and China in particular – is an important market for the industrial automation and the automotive industries.

As one of the few technical translation agencies specializing in automation technology, PRODOC is able to offer a technical translation service directly from German to Chinese. In general, only the English to Chinese language combination is offered.

German texts as the basis for translations into all European languages

  • Problematic language combinations

For technical translations into European languages you will almost always find a technical translator with a good command of German, because the German capital goods industry is the leader in Europe.

However, as soon as you want to translate the language of a small European country into that of another small EU country, it becomes difficult to find a suitable translator.

The solution: German as intermediate language

In most cases, one therefore first translates from the source language into German. The German texts can then be translated into the desired European language.

This is often the best choice – even ifsome blurring automatically occurs through double translation!

  • Proper presentation of the translation

is dependent on the character set that is used:
    • The same character set can usually be used for the source and target languages for translations between Western European languages.
    • If an Eastern European language is included, it may be necessary to select a separate character set to properly depict all letters of the translated text. 1-byte characters still suffice, however.
    • For translations into Asian languages, 2-byte character sets are unavoidable due to the range of used characters. Before the order is started, a check should be performed to determine whether the used software is Unicode capable and whether a suitable character set is available.

For more information about character sets, see our post regarding fonts.
